About
The power team is the "spark" that brings the event to life by providing an uninterrupted source of electricity in the middle of the desert.
The team’s responsibilities follow the full lifecycle of the event:
- Strategic Design: Power Architects use specialized tools like QGIS mapping and "nopywer" automation scripts to create an optimized digital design of the grid. They calculate "phase balancing" and load requirements to ensure the generators don't trip and that cables are used efficiently.
- Logistics and Administration: there's a lot of "behind-the-scenes" work, including tracking budgets, and managing a unified inventory of thousands of meters of cable, distribution boxes, and tools, and more.
- Physical Build: Before the event begins, Grid Meisters and volunteers translate digital maps into reality by digging over 1 km of trenches, laying heavy cables, and placing weather-protected distribution boxes across the site.
- 24/7 Sustaining: During the event, the team provides constant oversight. "Power Rangers" and Grid Meisters are on-call to troubleshoot stability issues, rearm generators if they trip, and ensure the "grid tentacles" continue to reach every corner of the community.
- Strike: Once the event ends, the team is among the last to leave. They dismantle the entire grid, itemize the gear to ensure nothing is lost or broken, and pack everything back into storage for the following year.
Ultimately, the power team functions through communal effort, relying on both high-level engineering and dedicated physical labor to ensure the community has the energy it needs to create art and celebrate safely. Does that sounds like your jam? Join the team!
